Book Art - Folded Books
My folded book series was the culmination of my MFA degree from New Mexico State University. My thesis was an installation where I created my “sanctuary” out of books, book pages, folded books and yarn. My folded books were that starting point of my thesis and have become much more over the years. They are created from discarded books, books that no one wanted anymore and many of which I “rescued” from the dumpster at the used bookstore in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I fold, decorate and stitch into these books creating sculptural forms that are wanted again. I like the irony of taking discarded, no longer loved or cherished objects of creative thought put to paper and that with a little love and creative folding become objects that people desire again.
The folded books have been embellished with beads, thread, silk, handmade yarn and more. I have sewn into them, cut them, tore them (once didn't like that at all), drawn into, added pages, added endpapers, recovered, retitled and I'm sure more. Each time I return to this series I add something new to that list.
